Humoral immunity differs from cell-mediated immunity in that it uses

Antibodies produced by B-cells to combat pathogens.

Humoral immunity relies on antibodies produced by B cells to combat pathogens. These antibodies circulate in body fluids and recognize specific antigens on extracellular pathogens and toxins. By binding to these targets, antibodies can neutralize them directly, prevent their attachment to host cells, cause clumping (agglutination), and mark them for destruction by other immune cells (opsonization). They can also activate the complement system to help lyse pathogens. This is distinct from cell-mediated immunity, which depends on T cells to kill infected host cells and to regulate immune responses. Antibodies can’t reach intracellular pathogens, which is why the T-cell–mediated arm is essential for those infections. The other ideas—phagocytes as the main defense, or the complement system acting alone—don’t define humoral immunity, since those elements relate to other aspects of immunity or are only parts of the broader response.

T-cells to kill infected cells and regulate immune responses.

Phagocytes as the primary defense.

The complement system as the sole mechanism.
